Evangelist J. R. Bronger announces resignation; congregation begins search for new gospel preacher 11-Sep-2000 Evangelist J. R. Bronger has announced his resignation as preacher and elder at Traders Point Church of Christ, effective no sooner than 1 December and no later than 31 December. J. R. will become the preacher at the Danville (Indiana) Church of Christ. Choking back emotion, J. R. announced his resignation Sunday morning, 3 September, after the morning worship service's invitation song. He explained that the Danville church, which has faced stiff challenges in recent months, asked him in 1999 to come work with them. J. R. declined at the time, but remained in contact with that congregation and finally recently agreed to become their preacher. J. R. explained that he would not leave Traders Point were it not for the Danville church's strong need for leadership. He praised the strength of the Traders Point congregation, noting that many of its men are equipped to preach and many of its men are equipped to lead. He urged members to consider their skills and gifts, pray on the matter, and consider offering more of themselves in service to God and to the congregation. The announcement triggered strong emotions among congregation members. The congregation was decidedly subdued after worship, lingering to discuss the matter amongst themselves. The congregation has immediately begun a search for a new gospel preacher. At a men's meeting following the Wednesday, 6 September Bible study, elders Bob Choate and Herb Smelser asked that members submit in writing either names of qualified men or lists of desired qualifications for the next preacher. Several men expressed strong desire that the congregation take its time to find the right man to preach, even if it means having no dedicated preacher for a time after J. R. leaves. J. R. remains fully active as elder and preacher. He will work with the other elders and the deacons to ensure a smooth transition of his duties upon his departure. |
