The Power of Being Together

Jeff Bockmiller
7 March 2004

A while back, my Dad talked with me about having a “North Side” Friday night Bible study.  I thought to myself, “Eh, that doesn’t sound too bad.  Every other week for a couple of hours on a Friday evening. I can handle that.”  At the time, I wasn’t really thinking about the benefits of just a few hours on a Friday night spent with some fellow Christians.

It has now been a few weeks and we have met several times to study and discuss the topic of Prayer.  So far the study has been excellent.  A typical Friday night for me would either be movies, bowling or just hanging out with friends.  But now, every other Friday we get together in my parents living room and talk about Prayer.

Prayer is an excellent topic and has really helped me out especially because I was lacking in that specific area.  But that is not the real meat and potatoes of this article.  The fact that we are getting together and meeting outside of services has made a huge difference in my life and my overall strength and faith.

Over the course of our study, I have gotten to know all of the families that attend and what is going on in their individual lives.  These families also now know each of the different struggles I face on a daily  basis.   During the study,  we discuss  our  problems  and needs and how they apply to the particular lesson we were talking about that evening.  Afterwards, someone is chosen to lead us in a group prayer and ask our Heavenly Father for His help with our concerns.

I have not only gotten to know these fellow Christians better, but I have also grown stronger in faith and prayer, and have more in common with each of them than before.  When I see these people at services, I can ask how they are doing and if they need any help or prayers.  They can also do the same for me.  Our relationship has grown that much stronger.

The irony of this whole article is that we meet every other Friday for just a few hours.  One hour is spent studying and the rest of the time we talk and discuss our lives.  Imagine if we all only spent just a few hours each week getting to know each other and doing things together.  How would it affect our lives as Christians?  How would it affect our strength and faith?  How would it affect the unity at Traders Point?  All of these are questions to ponder.  Hebrews 10:24-25 says,  “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.”
