Today’s Woman

Ron Ward
August 20, 2000

"The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed." — Titus 2:3–5

Modern society dictates just the opposite of what the Bible teaches. Women should work outside the home. Being a homemaker is archaic, unfulfilling, and politically incorrect. As far as being discreet, today’s women throws caution to the wind. "I can say, do, and wear whatever I desire and whatever makes me feel good about myself." Chaste is another old-fashioned word that no longer is part of modern language. A woman’s body is her own and she can have as many partners as she wants, so long as she engages in safe, responsible sex. Abortion is her right! It’s her body and no one, including God, is going to tell her what she can and cannot do with it.

Today, being a homemaker is degrading to many women everywhere. To be truly fulfilled and strong, a woman must become active in today’s work force. She feels entitled to it, and it is her right to have every opportunity that a man has. After all, in today’s society, her income is just as important as that of her husband. Often her salary is needed — after all, you see, it’s the size of the house she owns and the model of the SUV she drives. And, oh yeah, there is it the expense of the day care center that alone offers the type of opportunities needed for the children.

Today’s truly successful woman will set aside time for a few rounds of golf, or if not golf, perhaps tennis. Being successful in the physical world is more important to many modern women than being successful spiritually. Women of today have a difficult time knowing what is bad and what is good. (See Isa. 5:20). Being bad is good and being good is bad. And how many men actually desire a good woman? That is, a morally upright woman of good character. One that is kind, charitable, and loving. According to today’s society, a good woman is skinny, slinky, enjoys sporting events, plays pool, and drinks Budweiser beer. And by the way, she is working her way up the cooperate ladder in order to bring in the big bucks. "Obedience to my husband? Are you kidding? He does not tell me what to do! I bring home just as much money as he does, as a matter of fact, I bring home more than he does. I have just as much say — if not more — as he does in this household, and if doesn’t like it, tough!"

The Bible has absolutely no significance and plays no part in a modern woman’s life. To her, the Bible is outdated, and after all, "It’s just your interpretation anyway. I interpret it differently. Besides God loves everyone and I have my own personal relationship with my God."

It is safe to say that today’s woman is just the exact opposite of the woman we read about in Titus 2:3–5.
